What the approved agency mark means.
Listings marketed by an estate or letting agency show its name, logo and this mark once we've checked the agency. Here's what we check, and what the mark doesn't tell you.
What we check
Before approving an agency, a PlotPerch reviewer confirms each of these independently, using public registers, the scheme or provider, or the agency's own published contact details. A certificate on its own isn't enough.
- Business identity: the business exists and trades as named, for example through Companies House.
- Authority and contact: the person applying is authorised to represent the agency, confirmed through its independently published business contact details.
- Redress scheme: membership of an approved redress scheme, which is required for residential estate agency work in the UK.
- Anti-money laundering supervision for agencies that handle sales.
- Data protection registration with the Information Commissioner's Office.
- Public liability insurance.
- Deposit protection arrangements for agencies that let property.
Where an item genuinely doesn't apply to an agency, the reviewer records why. Approval lasts until a recheck date, set no later than a year ahead or before any of the agency's credentials expire, whichever is sooner.
What the mark doesn't mean
- It isn't a rating or recommendation of the agency's service, fees or advice, and it doesn't guarantee any outcome.
- It doesn't verify a particular property. Each listing is reviewed separately for the advertiser's authority to market it and for its content. Always check the details yourself.
- PlotPerch isn't a regulator, a redress scheme or an estate agent. If you have a complaint about an agency, raise it with the agency first, then with its redress scheme.
When the mark is removed
The mark and the agency's logo disappear from all its listings straight away if its approval lapses at the recheck date or is suspended, for example because a credential has expired or we receive a well-founded concern. The agency can reapply once the issue is resolved.
